Mission & Background
Founded in 1958, APPA is the leading not-for-profit trade association made up of over 1000 pet product manufacturers, their representatives, importers and livestock suppliers. Our membership consists of a diverse group representing both large corporations and growing business enterprises worldwide.
APPA's mission is to promote, develop and advance pet ownership and the pet products industry and to provide the services necessary to help its members prosper. To accomplish these objectives and to provide APPA members with valuable benefits, the Association works hard to develop programs and services which serve our members’ unique needs. By conducting industry-related market research and holding educational seminars and teleconferences, APPA helps keep you in the know about important industry information, and gives you the tools you need to make important business decisions. Global Pet Expo
Global Pet Expo, the pet industry's largest annual trade show, is presented by the American Pet Products Association (APPA) and Pet Industry Distributors Association (PIDA). The 2012 Global Pet Expo featured 896 exhibitors, 2,787 booths and more than 3,000 new product launches. 5,011 pet product buyers from around the world attended.
In 2013, Global Pet Expo will take place February 20-22 in Orlando, Florida. To better accommodate buyers and exhibitors, the Show will now follow a Wednesday, Thursday, Friday format. Government & Regulatory Affairs
Additionally, APPA has an established Government and Regulatory Affairs Department whose activities are directed towards the advancement of APPA members and the pet industry through member cooperation and advocacy. The committee also monitors and responds to legislation and regulations. Most recently, APPA’s Government Affairs team played a key role in getting the Minor Use and Minor Species Animal Health Act (MUMS) signed by President George W. Bush. This is one of the most significant pieces of federal legislation to the pet product industry to be passed in recent history.
Promoting Pet Ownership & the Pet Industry
In 2005, APPA implemented the PAL (Pets Add Life) PSA Campaign. The PAL campaign is designed to encourage people to appreciate the value of pet ownership, teach people to be responsible pet owners, and promote the importance of pet ownership to good mental health, companionship and love. The PAL campaign delivers a wide variety of important pet related messages to a vast audience using Public Service Announcements, display ads, posters, brochures, and news stories. To further promote the pet industry and to more clearly define its goals and objectives, APPA has played an integral role in establishing a Pet Industry Coalition, a group comprised of a collaboration of diverse leaders within the pet industry. While this group is in its infancy, it has identified key issues facing the industry and is currently taking steps to address those issues.
