President’s Message

Make the Most of Your APPMA Membership

By Charles Miller
President, APPMA

Charles Miller
Is your APPMA membership an expense or an investment? How you answer this question will affect the “value proposition” your trade association represents. The fact that membership has doubled in the past eight years suggests that most companies do value their membership. Attendance and booth sales at the APPMA Show in New Orleans are further indicators of value. These member services are the prime reasons companies join and continue their involvement. A small and growing group of members have discovered many additional services provided by your Association. I want to emphasize that it is your Association.

I was struck recently by the confusion exhibited in a national television interview. The news team was on the street asking passers-by about a recent increase in a user fee for a public facility. One bright young citizen’s response was: “I think these fees are unfair. The government should pay for it.” Somehow he missed the civics lesson that we are the government, and we provide the funding to government agencies. It is equally true that you are APPMA. Neither the staff at our association offices, the board nor the officers are APPMA. You are. Please allow me to encourage your further participation in your Association and the services provided to you.

A great way to do this currently is to complete the e-mail survey that was sent to you. At this writing, just over 16% of members have responded to the survey request. This is the most effective way we have of learning the wishes of the majority of our members. Keep in mind that our members range in annual sales from less than $500,000 to more than $50 million. Over three-quarters of our members report sales of less than $2 million annually. For this group, the Freightquote.com service has proven to be very popular. Our mid-size and larger members are making very active use of the legal, regulatory and legislative services. And of course, almost everyone uses the Pet Owner’s Survey to help guide their business decisions. Help us know what services you need, to promote your success.

Capture the value and benefits of APPMA membership. Get involved in your Association and help sustain this wonderful industry that provides for the pets we all love and cherish.
