American Pet Products Association Anticipates Happy Holidays for Pets this Year

(GREENWICH, Conn.) – Year after year, Americans continue to purchase gifts for their pets during the holidays, and Bob Vetere, President of the American Pet Products Association (APPA), explains why this year is sure to be no exception. Fifty-three percent of dogs and 38 percent of cats receive gifts at Christmas, according to those surveyed in the American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2011 / 2012 National Pet Owners Survey.

Pet retail segments are traditionally among the leaders during the holiday selling seasons, even in the toughest of economic situations. Although this was the case in 2008 and 2009, and the economy only slowly started to improve in 2010 and 2011, pet owners always continued to spend money on their pets over the holidays.

“We’ve already seen that pet owners reward their pets and purchase holiday gifts for them in even the toughest of economic times,” Vetere said. “With retailers and researchers expecting the 2012 holiday shopping season to be even better than last year, we have positive expectations for the pet industry.”

Seventy-five percent of retail leaders surveyed by management consulting firm Hay Group predicted that sales for the 2012 Christmas shopping season will be higher than they were in 2011. This same group of retail leaders said they planned to start their holiday shopping promotions even earlier than last year, with 42 percent saying they will start promoting Christmas shopping deals in October. Contrary to the consuming trends of the first nine months of 2012, half of the retail leaders surveyed said they expected to achieve higher sales without the deep discounting strategies they employed during the 2011 holiday shopping season. Market research company, ShopperTrak, is also predicting an overall year-over-year holiday shopping season increase of three percent. *

“We’ve seen many great new products and product lines at recent trade shows, that our members are debuting specially for the 2012 holiday season,” Vetere said. “We’re excited for loving pet owners to have fresh new options for holiday gifts for their pets this year. Our pets are part of our families and they deserve to be a part of the gift-giving season.”

APPA is also thrilled to announce out of 259 pet owners recently polled on Facebook, 93 percent said “yes” they plan on purchasing a gift for their pet this holiday season.
